Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has highlighted the importance of proper preparation for teams participating in Test series. In a press conference preceding India’s opening Test against England in Hyderabad, Dravid expressed concern about the challenges faced in arranging high-quality practice matches for touring teams.

Dravid reminisced about the past when touring sides had the opportunity to play against top-quality professionals in county cricket. However, he acknowledged the changing landscape and the current difficulty in securing quality opposition for practice matches. He mentioned the shift in approach, with India resorting to intra-squad games and assembling competitive A teams to simulate challenging practice scenarios.

The former cricketer emphasized the significance of providing quality opposition to touring teams, revealing that he and chief selector Ajit Agarkar have taken steps to ensure competitive matches. He cited the recent India A game against England Lions as an example of creating a platform for players pushing for national selection.

Dravid articulated his desire to reciprocate by fielding competitive teams when India tours other countries. He emphasized the need for teams to prepare well for overseas conditions, contributing to the competitiveness of Test series. Dravid and Agarkar are keen on implementing a policy to provide challenging opponents for touring teams, fostering a spirit of reciprocation.

Reflecting on the preparation for the Test series against England, Dravid mentioned the competitive India A team put forth against England Lions, featuring players vying for national selection. He acknowledged the challenge of preparing for overseas conditions but stressed the importance of helping teams prepare adequately for a competitive series.

As India embarks on a five-Test series against England, Dravid preferred to focus on the immediate challenge rather than contemplating the World Test Championship (WTC). He emphasized the need to concentrate on the upcoming series, addressing each Test match as it comes. Dravid recognized England as a formidable opponent, expecting a tough and exciting series.

The five-Test series against England marks the beginning of a comprehensive Test cricket calendar for India. While acknowledging the significance of the WTC, Dravid maintained that the team’s primary focus is on the present series, respecting the strength and experience of the English side.
